狄仁杰官居大理寺丞期间，发现一宗奇案，便赶去调查。 原来当地一退休官员蒋别驾遭抢劫谋害，死前在地上写下降魔咒，称会有魔鬼降临，杀死真凶替他报仇。狄仁杰从其妻子口中得知，半月前孙驼背神神秘秘来到店里找老板，老板更是秘密接见，花了二两千银子从他手中买下了一批宝贝。之后蒋别驾对外宣称宝贝乃是祖传，对外寻找买家。而这批宝贝也被杀人犯抢走了。 狄仁杰忙赶去调查孙驼背，却发现孙驼背惨死家中，家里也有被偷盗的痕迹。随后又对孙驼背展开调查，发现此人因为赌博弄的家道中落孑然一人。半月前他称自己发了财，还了赌债，可惜很快又把银子输光。但在蒋别驾死后没几天....
